Principles of Design in Photography

Balance - I created this mandala using Adobe Photoshop. It shows radial balance because the elements are being projected outwards from the center at intervals. There is also symmetry present in the composition.

Emphasis - Emphasis is used to guide your eyes to a certain spot in a photo. The emphasis in this photo is on the red umbrella because it is a different color than the green grass. The photographer used contrast to create an emphasis.

Movement - Movement is path in which the objects in the photo takes your eyes. In this photo, we see a dancer with a partner and even though we may only see them still, we can infer their previous moves based on the dust left behind.

Pattern - Pattern is the repetition of an object. In this photo, we see the repetition in all the window in the building. I like this photo because it almost looks as if they are coming out of the ground.

Repetition - Repetition works alongside with pattern to make the work of art seem active. The corn in this photo was taken with a micro lens and shows the pattern of the rows of corn. The alignment and coloring is the same with every corn.

Proportion - Proportion is the feeling of unity created when all parts relate well with each other. The chair is in focus because it is clear and larger than the running kid in the background. The small size of the kid helps to prove that his is further away than the chair from the camera.

Rhythm - Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. The signs are aligned in a row that shows the rhythm because they are all the same.

Variety - Variety is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewer's attention and to guide the viewer's eyes through and around an object. The roses have a variety of different colors and once you look at one rose, your eyes begin to wander around the rest of the rose to observe the other colors. The flower closest to us is in focus and is emphasized due to the low aperture on the camera blurring out the others.

Unity - Unity is the feeling of harmony between all parts of the work of art. The two trees practically hugging bring unity to the photo because it creates a sense of completeness. They are essentially becoming one here.

Elements Of Art

COLOR: Yellow and red are both warm colors. The light is coming in through the holes in order to help illuminate Juan's face. The warm colors correlate with his facial expressions.

 Form: Form is a three dimensional shape made up of other shapes. This structure is a cube with half circles cut out of all the sides. The edit on this photo gives it a dark, grueling feeling about the surrounding area.

LINE: The lines from the pillars here act as a GPS for your eyes. They take you from one pillar to the next until you finally reach the end. The light in the water also calm your senses because of the tropical water.

 

SHAPE: All letters and words are closed shapes. Here we have a photo of a sign with several letters in order to make up words prohibiting people to do something. Also, in the sign, these is a symbol made of shapes in which helps people understand the meaning of the sign. The sign itself is a shape which is attached to another shape. This photo was taken with a low apperature which allows the sign to be in focus but the bockground to be blurred. It also shows irony with all the people in the water.

SPACE: Space in an inevitable thing. In this photo, it is hard to tel where this tunnel truly ends. The lighting illuminates the tunnel and helps to give a type of glow to the room.

TEXTURE: Texture isn't only a thing that one can touch, but you can see it as well. This photo is a picture of a tree with hundreds of thorns piercing out of the sides. This gives the tree a haunted type of feel along with an unwelcoming sense to it as well.

VALUE: Value is the range from light to dark. The edit on this photo brings out the value because when i put the black and white edit on the photo, it lightened up the flower as well as darkened up the background.

Everyday Photo Challenge: Humor, Blue

 Humor: Here is a photo of the letters LOL drawn into a field of sand. This is a sample of humor because LOL is a phrase known as Laugh Out Loud. Humor is a part of all of our lives even if you don't believe so. I personally love humor because it makes life a whole lot more enjoyable. This photo was taken from an aerial view and really allows for the light to depict the letters shown.

Blue: Even though blue is my favorite color, in the world it is known for its sad connotation. Blue is a color which is known for depression. In this photo there is a fellow classmate wearing a blue shirt in front of a blue window. This symbolizes depression as well because windows are also allowed to help people see through, but in this photo it is being blocked by a huge blue cloth, symbolizing the sad connotation of the word blue. This photo shows the light hitting the window and also his hair. This photo was also taken from an aerial view looking down on him.

Everyday Photo Challenge: Broken, Can't Live Without, Something That You Miss

 Broken: In this photo here, there are two pencils in which were snapped in half. This represents something that is broken. What I did with this photo is I took two broken pencils and aligned them in the shape of a piece sign. This shows that even though something may be broken, it could still be useful and make you happy. This photo is taken from an aerial view and taken from the side in order to make the viewer spend that extra second to turn his head.

 Can't Live Without: This here is a picture of my car; a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Transportation is key in a persons life and without it, life would be a lot more stressful. I am fortunate enough to have a car and a drivers license. This allows me to travel wherever i need to be in a punctual manner. This photo was taken at a slightly upward angle from the side. The lighting reflects off of the car to illuminate certain parts of the car.

Something That I Miss: Here is a picture from the balcony of my house. The ocean is a fun loving place in which reminds me a lot of my childhood. I use to go down to the beach all the time in order to get away from all the stress of the real world and just sit back and relax. Now, it is a lot harder to find the time to do so. I miss those days with no responsibility. This photo was taken from a high view. It allows for the photo to capture a lot of objects in the photo.

Everyday Photo Challenge: Routine, Hot, Obsession

 Routine: Every person has some sort of routine whether they know it or not. The most common American routine is to either make a coffee or stop by a coffee shop everyday. Unlike the majority of adults, I am not a coffee lover, but still took this photo because a huge party of Americans day's. This photo is taken from above and is a shoot- to- frame photo.

 Hot: In California, summer is a hot time. Instead of taking a generic photo of the hot sun, I decided to take a shot of a hot function that is often taken for granted; the seat warmer. In this photo, I shot from an angle from below looking up. The two lights help show that both seat warmers are on full blast! The rule of thirds also comes into play here.

Obsession: I have a lot of obsessions in this world, however, sweets and dessert definitely fall number one. I have not one, but several sweet teeth and can never pass up on a dessert... even for breakfast. This photo was taken from the side and helps show the effect of the lighting.

Every Day Photo Challenge: Habit, Looking Down

Habit: On this day, I was asked to take a picture of a habit that I have. I couldn't decide between eating or just always playing sports, so I decided to choose a food that would represent both; peanuts. Peanuts is a food that is almost always found at sporting events. This photo that I took shows an aerial view of this food. The light bounces off the blue and white wrapper which lights up the peanuts.

Looking Down: Last night I went to the Dodgers game as they played the Phillies. I sat in the lodge level and had a great view of the entire field. This is a shoot- to- frame photo in which I did not edit it one bit. In the dark, late night, the bright lights help to illuminate the field of play. The angle was slightly downwards since I was above the field, but not too much since I was still a great distance away.

Every Day Photo Challenge: Feelings, Bag, Whatever

 How I feel today: Today i was asked to take a photo of how I felt. I decided to take a picture of the sun because I feel very happy. What better way to show happiness than a ray of sunshine. Nature is a very important part of my life which is the reason I took this particular photo.

 Inside My Bag: This photo is a shot of what is inside my baseball bag. I was asked to take a photo of "inside my bag" so I thought since I love baseball so much, why not my baseball bag! In this photo is my batting helmet which is green and gold. These colors represent my school colors.

Whatever I Feel Like: This is a photo of the gym i go to; The Manhattan Beach Country Club. I decided to take my photo of the gym because I am a very motivated person and the gym is a symbol for motivation. No one makes you go to the gym, so it takes self-motivation to workout.

Everyday Photo Challenge: Self, Favorite Place, Independence

 Self: The photo challenge of the day was to take a photo of myself. I'm not a big fan of selfies so I decided to get my full body in the photo! In this photo I am at a friends house because when I am hanging out with my friends is when I am truly the happiest.

 My Favorite Place To Be: My Favorite place to be is at or on a baseball field. There is nothing like the historic Wrigley Field! This photo shows the historic ivy on the walls along with hundreds of people sharing the same passion as me. And what a better day to go to a baseball game than on the weekend of America's Independence Day!

 Independence: The American flag is the greatest symbol of Independence. No better place in the world! This photo was taken on the 4th of July, the most American, Independent holiday there is!

What I Wore: I decided to throw on a nice collared shirt to go out for sushi and spend the night with a friend for his birthday. I tend to dress nice when I go out because you never know who you'll see! this is of me along with our waiter that evening.

Hi, my name is Brett Davis and I am a 17 year old amateur photographer. I was drawn to photography due to the fact that I love to relive certain memories in my head. Photographers aren't defined by their style of work, but by how much heart goes into it. To be honest, I have taken photography for granted until about a month ago. I never spent time on a photo and always seemed to rush the process. Now, with my new knowledge, I have learned the difference a little time can make. My goal is to be able to know how to fully work all the little functions and features on a camera in order to make my photo's that much better.The brain is a crazy thing and continues to amaze us day in and day out. I always believed I was right brain dominant, however, after taking a brief quiz today, I learned that both my left and right brain worked the same amount. Our brain isn't only important in our studies, but in our creative process as well. Our brain is the organ which gives us the crazy ideas for our artwork. I have a crazy creative process in that I have no clue how it works. Ideas just come in and out an i have no clue why. My photographs mainly reflect who I am because if closely observed, they are meant to crack a smile and give a warm sensation in your heart, and that' what I'm all about. If you had to know one thing about myself, it would be that i am extremely motivated and strive for success in everything I do.

I take photos as a hobby in order to remember special moments in my life.
